Sociedad led for half an hour before Real Madrid restored parity five minutes from half-time through young French midfielder Eduardo Camavinga. Three minutes later, Croatian international Luka Modric gave Real Madrid the lead for the first time in the game and they were able to preserve it until the end of the first half. Real Madrid went on to score two more goals in the second half through Karim Benzema (penalty) and Marco Asensio to make it a comprehensive result.
With the big win over Real Sociedad, Real Madrid opened up an eight-point lead over nearest challengers Sevilla who could only play a goalless draw at Deportivo Alaves.
